Staged Commercial Car Park Redevelopment – Woolworths Port Pirie

JVJ Civil & Asphalt was engaged by Fleurieu Civil to machine‑lay AC10 hot mix across the Woolworths Port Pirie car park as part of a staged upgrade. Over October to November 2025, our paving crew supplied, transported, and placed 6,000 m² at 40 mm thickness across three mobilisations. Works were sequenced to align with Fleurieu Civil’s program and completed in a live trading environment. With asphalt brought in from Adelaide, we needed to maintain temperature control and compaction quality while keeping public access safe and minimising disruption to critical retail periods.

The Challenge

The car park remained open throughout construction, with Woolworths and neighbouring businesses trading as usual. Staging had to protect busy periods, shopper access, and site safety. No local asphalt plant meant every load travelled more than 220 km, increasing the risk of heat loss and program slippage. Early spring rain put pressure on dates and resurfacing windows. The surfacing scope had to integrate with demolition and civil works, hold quality across large bay sizes, and avoid any impact on Christmas trade while meeting compaction, level, and finish standards.

The Solution

We delivered the asphalt in three tightly planned mobilisations using a Vögele 1303‑3 paver. Our Adelaide fleet transported AC10 hot mix under strict temperature protocols, allowing target compaction on arrival. Crew schedules flexed around weather and trading peaks, with night and off‑peak working to keep the site safe and accessible. Bays were set out to suit the staging plan, with jointing, levels, and tie‑ins managed to protect drainage and finished ride. Daily coordination with Fleurieu Civil integrated surfacing with upstream works and kept the program on track.

The Result

By mid‑November, two stages were completed to specification with minimal disruption to shoppers and tenants. Surface levels, compaction, and finish met quality targets across all bays, positioning the project for full completion by late November 2025. Feedback from Fleurieu Civil, Port Pirie Council and Woolworths representatives noted the standard of workmanship, punctuality, and safe delivery in a live environment. The successful outcome reinforces JVJ’s capability to machine‑place high‑quality asphalt at scale under logistical constraints, and strengthens our ongoing partnership with Fleurieu Civil on time‑critical retail projects.
